My baby is 5.5 weeks old. He was exclusively nursing since day 1, and it was going great, absolutely no issues. He had never even been offered a bottle until Friday.

I was unexpectedly in the hospital from Friday til this morning. Baby was with my mom and had to drink formula as I was on too many meds I had to pump and dump.

I did pump throughout my entire hospital stay. My supply was very inconsistent I’m sure because of many things. The stress of being in the hospital, surgeries, I wasn’t allowed to eat and a lot of the time not even allowed to drink water. Sometimes I’d pump (both boobs combined) 1.5oz, sometimes 3oz, once or twice I got 5oz but very inconsistent output the whole time.

Now I’m home I don’t really know how I’m supposed to get back to exclusively nursing. Baby is eating 4-5 oz of formula every 3-4 hours. My supply is not that high right now.

Do I nurse and just top him off with formula?

Do I nurse and then pump? Won’t I be empty from just finishing nursing?

How do I time everything out?

Remembering that baby gets out more milk than a pump does. Personally i would cut out two oz of formula at every feed every 2-3 days until i was back to fully breastfeeding. Nurse first then top up with 2-3 oz of formula. This should be just slightly less than what they need, which will cause baby to cluster feed which will increase your supply. Dont give formula more often than every 3 hours. Make sure to drink lots of water and eat/snack frequently. If baby seems content after just breastfeeding ( you said you pumped 5oz sometimes) then dont give formula.

I don’t have much experience of what you’re going through, and it sounds tough! At the end of the day do what feels best for you and is easy. My daughter had jaundice so she needed formula and now we know she also has a tongue tie so she isn’t able to pull milk from the breast very well right now. We’re getting it clipped soon!

I’ve been offering the breast for 15 minutes, then I pump while I bottle feed her breast milk.

I think I’d do the same in your situation. Offer your breast first then go ahead and pump and feed formula.

You can also try power pumping! Just make sure to pump every time your baby ears to get your supply up and eventually once you feel like you are making enough I’d increase time at the breast and decrease the amount of formula offered and see if your baby seems satisfied.
